Water-soluble dietary fiber with domestic "Kirarimochi" barley
Est. 1924
Exterior at the time of founding
Our Story
Since our founding in 1924, we have walked alongside rice and grains for over 100 years. In our process of creating grain products using naked barley and Daishimochi, we focused on "Kirarimochi," which has an exceptionally high content of barley β-glucan. Driven by the desire to create products that showcase functional benefits, we developed contract cultivation with local farmers, giving birth to our "Kirari Mochi Barley."
What is Mochi Barley (Waxy Barley)? Nutrition and Characteristics
Mochi barley is a general term for varieties of barley that possess waxy properties.
Barley is a plant in the grass family, categorized by "covered vs. naked," "two-row vs. six-row," and "non-waxy vs. waxy."
Two-row barley: Grains grow on only two of the six rows of florets on the ear.
Six-row barley: Grains grow on all six rows of the ear.
Two Major Features of Mochi Barley
Feature 01
Contains more β-glucan than non-waxy types
It contains approximately 1.4 times more β-glucan—a type of water-soluble dietary fiber gaining attention as a functional health ingredient—than non-waxy barley. (Company analysis)
Feature 02
Sticky, chewy, and delicious
When heated and cooked, it has a "chewy" texture, making delicious barley rice. You can easily enjoy it just by mixing it with white rice.
Why Choose Kirarimochi?
Kirarimochi is a domestic variety of two-row naked barley (waxy barley). It is rare due to the difficulty of cultivation, and among the many varieties of mochi barley, it stands out for the following reasons:
- High β-glucan content — Among the top class of domestic mochi barley varieties. It is known as a variety with a high content of barley β-glucan (water-soluble dietary fiber).
- Cooks white and resists discoloration — It tends to maintain its whiteness even after time has passed after cooking, ensuring it remains visually appealing.
- Less bitterness and aftertaste — Compared to other mochi barley varieties, its unique flavor and bitterness are suppressed, creating a taste you won't get tired of eating every day.
- Chewy and popping texture — It possesses a strong stickiness and elasticity unique to waxy grains, allowing you to enjoy a distinct texture even when mixed with white rice.
